2019 Canada Zonal & Easter Sectionals (FIDE & CFC)

Thursday, April 18th : Round 1 @ 7pm
Friday,  19th : Round 2 @ 10am : Round 3 @ 5pm

sections: the top section is the: 2019 Canada Zonal   the Easter Sectionals are: U2200/U1900/U1600 

FIDE/CFC/FQE ratings will be captured after registrations close on April 17th   each player’s ELIGIBLE SECTION will be set as follows: higher of FIDE Standard & CFC Regular ratings (if from Quebec, also compare FQE “cote lente”)    Chief Organizer reserves right to adjust ratings!    each player will play in their own ELIGIBLE SECTION    players deemed UNRated will play in U1600 Sectional

ratings: (the rating to set ELIGIBLE SECTION might not apply to PAIRINGS)   the ratings to be used for PAIRINGS will be:   for the 2019 Canada Zonal: FIDE rating (if none exists, then UNR)   for the Easter Sectionals:  the rating that set ELIGIBLE SECTION

timings: re Law 6.7.1: the default time is 30 minutes   90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one. N.B. all sections must use scoresheets provided by event
byes:  no ½-point byes available in the Zonal section up to 3 ½-point byes IF requested with registration may only be requested for Rounds 1 through 7 any other requested byes will be 0-point
Anti-Cheating: one set of restrooms (Foyer area near Ballroom playing area) IA/IO/FL Hal Bond will generally be positioned near this area other measures to be implemented may not be pre-announced N.B. suspect games analysis BEFORE prize distribution!

deadlines: no hotel discounts after March 31st   no registrations after April 17th   therefore, no onsite registrations   no onsite smoking, vaping, etc.

cost: there are two components to cost, which we call STAY and PLAY  players who pay to STAY at the hotel will in turn pay less to PLAY  this is because our prime sponsorship is based on hotel room nights  without this arrangement, this event would not have been possible!

GM: Canadian GM who registers by March 31st:  STAY = FREE double occupancy room (Thursday evening – Monday morning)  PLAY = FREE entry

IM/WGM: Canadian IM/WGM who registers by March 31st: PLAY = FREE entry

STAY:  each room is $120 per night, ALL-IN!   the most common situations will be: 1) single occupancy (that “room prime” pays $120 per night) 2) double occupancy (each “room co-prime” pays $60 per night) each room prime/co-prime will be asked for credit card at check-in, for “incidentals” extra people, such as parents and partners, cause no extra cost after the $120/night N.B. if you’re paying to STAY, don’t forget your $40 discount to pay to PLAY!


PLAY:  all other Zonal players: $260 before March 1st (less $40 if paying to STAY) $280 before April 1st (less $40 if paying to STAY)   $300 before April 18th (chess rates ending April 1st)

PLAY:  all Sectional players:   $160 before March 1st (less $40 if paying to STAY)   $180 before April 1st  (less $40 if paying to STAY)   $200 before April 18th (chess rates ending April 1st)

Canada Zonal: (NO splitting of prizes/titles for first three places) 1st: $2000     entry to World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk (Sep-Oct 2019)     $1000 travel subsidy from this event via the CFC Office 2nd: $1000     entry to American Continental in Brazil (dates TBD)     $500 travel subsidy from this event via the CFC Office 3rd: $500 4th: $250   N.B. all money prizes to be emailed/mailed AFTER April 22nd!
possible titles: tied for 1st place = IM title 2nd and 3rd place = FM title & IM norm 65% in 9 games = FM title 50% in 9 games = CM title
tiebreaks: ONLY for ALL prizes/titles for first three places in Canada Zonal:
1) direct encounter 2) Buchholz Cut 1 (Buchholz less lowest opponent result) 3) Buchholz Cut 2 (Buchholz less lowest two opponents results) 4) Sonneborn-Berger 5) coin flip (virtually impossible scenario!)
