Annotated Game: Peter Sibbald vs. Dave Gordon (Mar 26, 2012)

This is part of our new initiative, where every week (that we have a tournament) somebody from the club will annotate the game from Board 1. The idea is that the annotator will get feedback on how to annotate a game, while at the same time, everybody can learn from the strategies and mistakes of our top player (presumably on Board 1).

Here's is our first annotated game from Round 2 of the 2012 Peter Sibbald Spring Open:

This game was annotated by Huxley. Please provide constructive comments. You should either (1) comment on the style of annotation, like what to include/exclude in the annotation, OR (2) comment on the game itself, by providing additional insight, and/or game alternatives. Let's find useful tips and strategies that we can apply to our own game and annotations.

Also, do let us know if you'd like to annotate any of the upcoming Board 1 games as well. Only 3 more rounds till the end of the season.

  1. I was hoping someone else would comment first. Here are some of my thoughts to get things started:

I think after 5.Nf3, Black should have seen that White has e5 as a potential pawn break, and played e5 before 6... Ngf6. This would have avoided the uncomfortable continuation where White has a pawn on e6.

Also, 6.Be2 seems more natural than the suggested Bf4, because this move also prepares castling on the King side. By waiting to move the dark square bishop, White has options for Bf4 or Bg5, or even Be3. An immediate 6.Bf4 would also prompt e5 by Black, which gives Black some tempo.
