2012 EASTERN ONTARIO YOUTH CHESS TOURNAMENT

EASTERN ONTARIO YOUTH CHESS TOURNAMENT
will be held on
Sunday April 15th 2012 at HMCS CATARAQUI, Kingston.

This tournament is open to all students in Grades 1 to 12 who know how to play chess.

  • Students in Grades 1 to 8 play against other students in the same Grade.
  • Students in Grades 9 to 12 will be combined in a single section.
  • All students play at least 5 games.

DIRECTIONS: HMCS Cataraqui is just east of the LaSalle Causeway. From Highway 2, turn North at the RMC / Fort Henry traffic lights, and follow Navy Way around behind Constantine Arena and the Sports Centre to HMCS Cataraqui. HMCS Cataraqui is also very close to Sunday bus route E12.

REGISTRATION for all Grades and payment of fee, ($10.00): 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. - Advance registration is not required.

Players briefing: 11:00 a.m. - All students then play 5 games.

All games will be played in the gymnasium. - There will be space for parents and guardians to sit around the edge of the gym, (or outside if the weather’s suitable.) Spectators should bring their own chairs.

LUNCH: There will be a break for lunch after Round 2. Food and drinks can be purchased at HMCS Cataraqui.

Different Grades will finish their fifth game at different times, but not before 2.30 p.m. Please note: students will only be supervised while they are playing chess.

Top-scoring players may be required to play additional, play-off games, to determine qualifiers for the ONTARIO CHESS CHALLENGE, to be held in Toronto on Sunday April 22nd. - We can send 1 student in Grades with up to 10 players in this tournament; 2 students in Grades with 11 to 20 players; 3 students from Grades with 21 to 30 players; and 4 students from Grades with over 30 players. (The Provincial Champion in each Grade then plays in the CANADIAN CHESS CHALLENGE, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the end of May.)

AWARDS CEREMONY - Approximately 4:30 p.m. Medals will be presented to the top students in each Grade, once the play-off games have finished.

RATING: A numerical rating will be calculated for each player, so that they can compare their level of play, to that of other students across Canada. - These ratings will be posted on the Chess’n Math Association website at:
http://www.chess-math.org/2012eocc/ approximately one week after the tournament.

ENTRY FEE: $10.00 per student, payable in cash, or by cheque made out to "Chess'n Math Association".

EQUIPMENT: Students should bring their own pieces, if they are not fragile. Boards will be provided. (Some sets can be borrowed at the Tournament).

HELP WANTED: to set up the gym on Sunday morning April 15th. This will begin at 9.00a.m. - Coffee and donuts will be provided.

SCORERS WANTED: The more scorers we have, the smoother the Tournament runs! No knowledge of chess or previous experience is necessary for scorers. - There will be a meeting to brief helpers at HMCS CATARAQUI before the tournament, at 9.30a.m. on April 15th.

If you are interested in helping, or want more information, please contact Chris Hargreaves - tel. 613 389 8993 or email hargreavescp@sympatico.ca .

Chess Club Today - Mar 5, 2012

Hello all,

It doesn't look like we'll be having the IM today for the exhibition simultaneous chess match. So we'll probably just meet for casual chess. All are welcome. There is no chess next week (Mar 12), since it is Spring Break. And the next chess meeting is on Mar 19, when we start the Peter Sibbald Spring Open 2012.

See you guys there!
